Navigating the Storm Within: The Scary World of Feelings

In the intricate web of human emotions, one thing is certain: feelings are scary. They sneak up on us, sometimes like a gentle breeze and at other times, like a fierce storm, leaving us bewildered and vulnerable. We try to figure them out as they come, grasping at straws in the hope of understanding why we feel the way we do. But often, we find ourselves drowning in a sea of emotions, unable to make sense of it all.

Growing up, I experienced a relentless battle with anxiety and depression. These emotions were like relentless shadows that trailed my every step, casting doubt and darkness over my world. And if I’m being honest, my emotional cup was already full before I even stepped foot into nursing school. Little did I know that nursing school would be the catalyst that would cause my cup to not just overflow, but to explode.

Nursing school, with its demanding curriculum and the weight of responsibility it places on its students, became a crucible where my feelings were magnified. It was as if every emotion I had ever suppressed had suddenly come back to haunt me. The stress, the pressure, the heartache of seeing patients in pain, and the fear of making a mistake all combined to create a perfect storm within me.

One thing nursing school didn’t teach me was how to express these overwhelming feelings correctly. We’re never really given a manual on how to handle the torrent of emotions that accompany this noble profession. We’re not equipped with the tools to understand the emotional toll it can take on us.

But here’s the thing: acknowledging that feelings are scary is the first step. It’s okay to feel overwhelmed, anxious, or even depressed. These emotions are not a sign of weakness; they are a sign of our humanity. It’s crucial that we recognize the importance of seeking help when needed, whether it’s from a therapist, a friend, or a mentor. There’s strength in vulnerability, and there’s growth in seeking support.

As I continue my journey in nursing, I’ve come to realize that understanding and managing our emotions is an ongoing process. It’s not something that can be mastered overnight. It’s about learning to navigate the storm within, finding healthy outlets for our feelings, and showing ourselves the same compassion we extend to our patients.

So, to all my fellow healthcare professionals and anyone else grappling with the rollercoaster of emotions, remember this: It’s okay to feel scared, but it’s not okay to suffer in silence. Reach out, seek help, and know that you are not alone in this turbulent sea of emotions. We’re all in this together, learning how to sail through the storm and come out stronger on the other side.
