How Growing Lavender Has Become One of the Most Healing Parts of Our Journey

Sometimes, you discover something that slows you down, brings peace, and reminds you what truly matters.

For me, that has been growing lavender.

When we first planted it, I thought it would simply add beauty to our yard. I loved the scent and imagined using it for candles, bundles, and homemade products someday. What I didn’t expect was how deeply I would enjoy caring for these plants.

Now, when I step outside, I naturally slow down. I notice the lavender swaying in the breeze, listen to the bees, and appreciate the small details that make nature so remarkable.

Growing lavender has become more than gardening—it has become therapy.

Finding Peace in the Garden

The bumble bees are my favorite

One of my favorite parts of growing lavender is watching the pollinators.

Bees are drawn to the blooms, filling warm mornings with a gentle hum as they move from flower to flower. Instead of avoiding them, I’ve come to appreciate their role and find peace in simply observing them.

Even more surprising is how many ladybugs our lavender attracts. Some days I count five, other days ten, and occasionally fifteen or more scattered throughout the plants.

Seeing these beneficial insects thrive is a reminder that healthy gardens are full of life. Every bee, butterfly, and ladybug plays a role, and it’s rewarding to know our lavender supports them.

Spending time in the garden without distractions—no phones or deadlines—feels grounding. Just sunshine, fresh air, and nature at work.

Harvesting Lavender Has Become a Favorite Tradition

When harvest season arrived, I expected trimming lavender to feel like another task.

Instead, it became one of my favorite parts of summer.

My husband and I spent time cutting stems, gathering fragrant bundles, and enjoying the calming scent around us. There was no rush—just quiet, shared moments in the garden.

The aroma of fresh lavender is soothing, and bundling it felt less like work and more like mindfulness. It’s amazing how something so simple can quiet your mind.

These moments remind me why we dream of building our future homestead.

Learning Everything I Can About Lavender

It didn’t take long to realize I wanted to learn as much as possible.

Each answer led to more questions:

How should lavender be pruned?
When is the best time to harvest?
What’s the proper way to dry it?
Can every part of the plant be used?
How do you propagate new plants?

The more I learned, the more fascinated I became.

At the same time, I’ve learned to accept that we don’t have everything figured out—and that’s okay. This journey isn’t about perfection. Like our lavender, we’re growing over time. Some things work well, others don’t, and both are part of the process.

Researching, experimenting, and trying new techniques has been rewarding, but I’m also learning to give myself grace. Each season brings new lessons, and every mistake helps us improve.

Using Every Part of the Plant

One of my goals is to make sure nothing goes to waste.

Every part of the lavender plant has value.

The flower stems can be bundled and dried for décor, gifts, or markets. Once dried, the buds can be used in many ways:

  • Culinary lavender for baking and teas
  • Homemade lavender syrup
  • Bath salts
  • Sugar scrubs
  • Candles
  • Wax melts
  • Sachets
  • Potpourri
  • Lavender-infused oils

The leaves can be dried for bath products and crafts, while soft stems can be propagated into new plants. Even the woody stems can be composted to nourish future growth.

I love knowing every part of the harvest serves a purpose—a mindset I hope to carry into our future homestead.

Dreaming About Our Future Homestead

Our Future Homestead

Growing lavender has made our dream feel more tangible.

For years, we’ve talked about building a homestead—a place to grow food, flowers, and herbs, and create with our hands. A life that’s slower, more intentional, and centered on working together.

Lavender has given us a glimpse of that future.

Every bundle we tie, every plant we propagate, and every skill we learn brings us closer.

We’re also learning to embrace being beginners. We don’t have everything planned, and that’s part of the journey. This season of learning—trying, adjusting, and sometimes failing—is shaping us just as much as the end goal.

Like the lavender, we’re growing in our own time.

Creating Helpful Lavender Resources

As I’ve learned more, I’ve realized how overwhelming it can feel to get started.

There’s so much information, and it’s not always clear what advice to follow. That’s why I’ve begun creating simple, easy-to-follow lavender guides.

Lavender How To PDFs

These cover topics like:

  • How to plant lavender
  • When to harvest
  • The best way to trim
  • How to bundle for drying
  • Proper drying techniques
  • Removing buds from stems
  • Propagating new plants
  • Ways to use dried lavender
  • Making bath products, teas, candles, and more

My goal is to create resources that are both practical and beautiful—something you can easily follow and enjoy using.

Whether you’re growing your first plant or caring for an established garden, I hope these guides make the process feel more approachable.

Why Lavender Means So Much to Me

I never expected a simple plant to teach me so much.

Lavender has reminded me to slow down, appreciate the seasons, notice the bees, and enjoy working with my hands. It’s helped me focus on creating rather than rushing and spend more meaningful time with the people I love.

Most importantly, it’s taught me to be okay with not having everything figured out.

The rhythm of planting, pruning, harvesting, drying, and creating is something I genuinely look forward to—not because it’s perfect, but because it’s real.

There will be mistakes and things I’d do differently, but there will also be growth and moments that make it worthwhile.
